Damit sind neun Syndikate aus dem vergangenen Cup dabei. Die Briten, der Italiener Vasco Vascotto und die Griechen sind neu zum Kreis gestoßen. Gerüchte, dass Dennis Conner oder der Australier John Bertrand antreten werden, haben sich damit nicht bestätigt.
Die Regatta startet am 30. Januar 2009 und dauert zwei Wochen. Es wird auf den beiden Team-New-Zealand-Cuppern und den zwei AC-Yachten von BMW Oracle gesegelt. Am Tag sind sechs kurze Rennen vor Auckland's Waitemata Harbour geplant.
